Top 5 Style Icons of the White Crew Tee

To celebrate White Tee Supply month, we decided that we would put forward what we believe are the 5 most iconic white crew t-shirt wearers, as voted by us here at STÓR.

Number 5 : Tom Criuse (Top Gun)

Tom Cruise gets in at number 5 as Maverick in Top Gun. He rocks the white t-shirt throughout the movie usually with a pair of levi's and his airforce leather jacket. When you think of Top Gun, you think of white crew neck t-shirts!

Number 4 : Alex Turner

The Arctic Monkeys frontman has been known to "actually rock" the white crew tee on stage and is a true fashion icon of this look. He usually wears with jeans, leather boots, black biker jacket and slicked back hair. A rock legend of his time!

Number 3 : Steve McQueen

The "King of Cool" is next. There is an argument that he should be in at number one as he is probably the single most influential men's style icon of all time, but because he is a fashion legend for so many other looks like the Barbour Wax Jacket, the Baracuta G9 Harrington Jacket and the white plimsoll shoe that we decided he wasn't specific enough to the white crew tee. So we docked him a few spots!

Number 2 : James Dean

Best known probably for his role as Jim Stark in the infamous movie "Rebel Without a Cause", James Dean is remembered as a cultural icon of teenage disillusionment. He died in 1955, in a car crash, way before his time at the age of 24. His image lives on, however, usually wearing a white crew t-shirt and is recognised as an undisputed style icon of his own generation and beyond!

Number 1 : Marlon Brando

One of the most famous Hollywood actors of all time, Brando played numerous roles from Julius Cesar to Vito Corleone in the Godfather. His early days however are what cemented him as a Hollywood great and a true style icon. His roles in A Streetcar Named Desire and The Wild One proved to cement him as an icon of popular culture at the time.
There are so many great images of Brando wearing the white crew tee that we just had to pick him as our Number 1. Let us know what you think? and if you feel that any one else deserves to be in there instead.

WHITE TEE SUPPLY - 3 Ways to Wear This Months Box

This month's Supply Box contains a true classic and I'm going to show you exactly how to get the most from your white crew tee!
Casually.
It doesn't get simpler than a white crew neck t-shirt, a pair of nice quality denim jeans and a nice pair of casual shoes or boots. There are however a few stipulations. The t-shirt must be fitted, and the person wearing it in relatively good shape. I'm not saying you need to have a six pack, but a beer belly isn't going to cut it. For inspiration on how to carry off this look, check out our blog on Style Icons Of The White Crew Tee.
Undershirt.
The basic function of an undershirt is to absorb sweat and act as a barrier to your outer clothing. Usually worn under a nice business shirt and neck tie, the white crew tee is your only option here. How many times have you seen somebody wearing a gaudy print or a bright coloured t-shirt under a business shirt. It screams unprofessional and looks terrible. A good white crew tee actually enhances most business shirts from underneath once worn correctly. Pro-tip, make sure to always wear your necktie knotted to the top and button the business shirt fully, including the top button!
Lounging.
There's very few things more rewarding than choosing a day, usually at the weekend, to dedicate entirely to yourself. You've bought a fresh bag of coffee, curated your reading materials and switched off anything that beeps. So, what are going to wear? This is key for maximum lounging. I recommend a nice pair of jogging shorts and a fresh white crew neck t-shirt. There is nothing as nice as putting on a fresh white t-shirt, preferably made from something natural like organic cotton or bamboo for extra softness and comfort. The key is keeping it simple! No more than 2-3 items people!

The History Of The White Crew Tee

The undershirt, in the form of the white crew neck tee specifically, came about in the early part of the 20th century, when the US Navy issued their marines with white crew neck t-shirts. Their purpose was to absorb sweat primarily, but also they were used as a second layer that the marines could get dirty, to preserve the cleanliness of their uniforms.

After World War II veterans continued to wear their uniform pants and undershirts casually and a trend began to emerge. The white crew tee was born into everyday society and it wasn't just being used as an undershirt anymore!
Sports teams and other institutions were quick to adopt the white crew tee in the same way as the Navy did, and once it began to make it's appearance on big screen Hollywood movies an epidemic had started. Marlon Brando and James Dean were pioneers of this look which spread like wildfire with the youth of America.

Today the white crew tee is regarded as one of the most iconic pieces in fashion history and still remains an everyday essential for the average guy on the street as well as being a fashion item in it's own right.
